Residential Waste Heat to Recovery ORC

Residential Market:

There are significant challenges, which include:
– ORC is a waste heat energy solution, and if you have to pay for the fuel, or to harvest it, it does not have a payback (i.e. solar thermal energy)
– ORC is designed for 24/7 heat supply. Any fractional time heat supply sources have no payback
– Most residential waste heat sources are time limited (i.e. hot water heaters only operate a small amount of time, solar energy is only part of the day, etc.)
– Most residential applications for CHP have no payback, and required significant amounts of support. All result in no profit to the equipment supplier. A good example is the recent attempt of the residential sterling engine by Dean Kaman.

Title: 600 KWE ORGANIC RANKINE CYCLE WASTE HEAT POWER CONVERSION SYSTEM.  FINAL REPORT 

Subject: 

Abstract: The events and accomplishments of the Sundstrand 600 KWe Organic Rankine Cycle Systems are described. The ORC systems are compatible with diesel engine power plants and the Crane Co. glazing furnaces as waste heat sources. Field site personnel continue to demonstrate their ability to maintain and operate ORC system hardware. The ORC programmable sequencers can be programmed via phone lines from Rockford. This was successfully demonstrated using the Crane system. The hours of operation continued to increase. Separate abstracts were prepared for individual reports.

Infinity Turbine S CO2 Turbine 3D Metal Print ExOne

Anything bigger than 2 inches (build dimensions) resulted in poor tolerance and out of spec. Good for castings, but not much for anything else. We had high hopes for ExOne, but in the end, the entire order of 10 boxes of 3D metal printed parts was salvage value. The potential for additive printing is tremendous, if you have the right equipment. We found the smaller turbine 3d prints were fine (less than 2 inches) with good tolerance. The first few turbine blades that were printed (less than 2 inches in diameter) were less than $100 each. But then ExOne developed a new business model, which increased pricing so that it was not competitive with traditional machining.
