Synthesis and Medical Application of 3D Graphene Materials Three-Dimensional (3D) Graphene Materials There is currently no specific definition for 3D graphene materials arising in confusion as to if graphite is a 3D graphene material. This notwithstanding, researchers intend to engineer 3D graphene architectures with stable and high-performance usage of the graphene materials with a smart 3D arrangement of the graphene-like based layers or units, rather than graphite-like ordering with distorted or loss of surface area and other distinctive properties. Consequently, 3D graphene materials can be clearly defined as nongraphite 3D structured graphene materials. The graphene walls in a 3D graphene material should consist of less than 10 graphene layers and still maintain the general properties of graphene materials (Sun et al., 2020). Figure 4. The Relationship Between Graphene, 2D Graphene Materials, 3D Graphene Materials, and Graphite (Sun et al., 2020) Classification of 3D Graphene Materials (Sun et al., 2020) 3D graphene can be classified into three broad categories, these broad categories are further classified into various subunits. Based on the Currently Reported Works In this category, 3D graphene materials can be divided into two (2) types according to engineering scales these are: 1) Macroscopic 3D graphene materials or 3D graphene macrostructures are usually greater than (>100 μm in one or more dimensions) they include the macro 3D graphene monoliths (foams, sponges, aerogels), films, fibres, and millispheres; and 2) Microscopic 3D graphene materials that are less than (<100 μm in all dimensions) are usually powders microscopically but with micrometre scale or nanometre scale 3D structures.
