Synthesis and Medical Application of 3D Graphene Materials Figure 10. Schematic Diagram of Si atom sublimation on SiC (Aristov et al., 2010) 2) Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) a) Growth on Metals: This involves the formation of graphene by high-temperature pyrolysis of carbon-containing gases to grow the graphene films on transition metal substrates. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is categorized to proceed through either surface catalysed or segregation method depending on the metal. For the surface catalysed reactions, decomposition of the carbon-containing species and graphene formation occurs at the surface, the growth can be described as “self-limiting” to monolayer graphene as the surface is pacified once covered. For the segregation method, graphene forms through the diffusion of carbon dissolved in the bulk metal to the metal surface, which generally occurs on cooling because of the solubility of carbon in metals at lower temperatures. The number of the graphene layers produced by segregation usually depends on certain factors such as the amount of carbon dissolved and the rate of cooling. A wide range of metals, group 8-10 transition metals inclusive (i.e Fe, Ru, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Au, some alloys Co-Ni, Au-Ni, Ni-Mo, stainless steel) has been used for graphene growth (Edwards & Coleman, 2013). Figure 11. Scheme showing graphene growth on a metal surface and its removal (Edwards & Coleman, 2013) b) Substrate free: Graphene sheets are also synthesized directly in a gas using substrate- free methods where the entire synthesis process takes place in a smattering of a second in an atmospheric environment. These methods have also been used in the past to synthesize various carbon nanostructures such as nanodiamonds in a gas phase at low pressure (usually below 150 Torr) microwave plasma reactor (Figure 17) (Dato et al., 2008; Dato & Frenklach, 2010). 2530|Indonesian Journal of Multidisciplinary Science, 2(5), Feb, 2023
