Preface This thesis is submitted in candidacy for the PhD degree from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The work was carried out at the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage from January 2018 to August 2021 under the supervision of Professor Johan Hjelm and Professor Tejs Vegge. Part of the work was carried out at DTU Risø Campus (January 2018–July 2019) and part at DTU Lyngby Campus (February 2020–August 2021). The remaining six months were spent working at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences under the supervision of Professor Michael J. Aziz and his research group. The PhD project was partly funded by Innovation Fund Denmark through the Grand Solutions project ORBATS (file no. 7046-00018B) and the external stay was supported by a travel grant from Otto Mønsted Fonden.
