Acknowledgements I would first and foremost like to thank my main supervisor Johan Hjelm for the incredible support throughout the years we have worked together. You were always happy to help with whatever issues I was facing, encouraged me when my work seemed insurmountable, and listened enthusiastically to my scientific findings. Thank you for teaching me about electrochemistry, battery science, scientific programming, proofreading my thesis, and for having my back. A big thank you to my co-supervisor Tejs Vegge for many good discussions about my work and helping with planning my external research stay. Thank you to Michael J. Aziz, Zhijiang Tang, Eric Fell, and the rest of the redox flow battery group at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for hosting me for my external research stay. Thank you for the great group meetings, help in the lab, and for making it a rewarding experience both scientifically and personally. Thank you to Claudia Stearns for welcoming me into her home in Somerville and for many pleasant conversations, dinners, and surviving a flooded kitchen together. The Boston area will always hold a special place in my heart because of you all. A big thanks to the talented technicians and laboratory technicians at DTU Energy. Thank you to Mike Wichmann, Bent F. Hansen, Jens Østergaard, and Henrik Henriksen for helping with building the flow cell rig up from the ground and for creating custom equipment for my electrochemistry experiments. Thank you to Annelise Mikkelsen and Ebtisam Abdellahi for helping with finding and ordering the endless supply of chemicals that I needed for my work. I am grateful to Martin Helgesen, Jon E. Carlé, and Roar R. Søndergaard, all formerly associated with DTU Energy, for doing the hard work of developing and synthesising new quinone compounds that I had the pleasure of investigating electrochemically. A special thank you to my friends and colleagues Mathias, Suzanne, Florian, and Benedikt. Thank you for the coffee breaks at both Risø and Lyngby campus, for listening to my issues, playing board games and PoGO together, proofreading, and for cheering me up and on during the entire period. I cannot imagine how it would have been without you. Thank you to my former office mates Hendrik, Daniel, and Filippo for many good talks about electrochemistry and daily banter in the office. Thank you to Eftychia, Alexandros, Elena, Aiswarya, Nicola, Bhavana, Alexander, Jens, Elise, Mette, and David for joining me for Monday cake, trips to the beach, and making sure I never felt alone at work. Lastly, a big and heartfelt thank you to my boyfriend Rasmus, family, and friends for keeping me sane throughout the PhD studies. Thank you for proofreading, always being supportive of my work, and listening to all my stories about flow batteries and science. iii
