The design of the flow field directly influences the performance of RFBs, and an optimised design can lead to increased power density and energy efficiency by reducing the ohmic, mass transport, and pumping power losses [61]. Gerhardt et al. showed how the channel and land width dimensions of an interdigitated flow field affects the electrochemistry and fluid dynamics of symmetric one-container ferri-/ferrocyanide cells [61]. They found that there is a trade-off in the width of channels and lands in terms of lowering the overvoltage and pressure drop: thinner channels decrease the overvoltage but increase the pressure drop, whereas thinner lands increase the overpotential but decrease the pressure drop. The gaskets prevent the electrolytes from leaking out of the electrode-membrane as- sembly. The gaskets are made of an electronically insulating and thermally and chemic- ally stable material, typically a polyfluorinated polymer such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or Viton. The current collectors collect the electrons released on the oxidative side of the cell and redistribute them over the flow plates on the reductive side. They are made of a material with high electronic conductivity, such as gold-plated copper. The end plates provide structural support for the rest of the cell or battery and com- pression on the electrodes. They are typically held together by bolts and compressed by a known force. The end plates must be electronically insulated from the current collectors, which is achieved by covering the side of the current collector facing the end plate with an insulating layer. 18 inlet outlet
