(b) Experimental and theoretical collection efficiencies. 4.2.3 Carboxy-Substituted Benzoquinones The carboxy-substituted benzoquinones were of interest in the effort to find quinones that can act as the posolyte material in alkaline ORFBs. The electron-withdrawing carboxyl groups should in theory raise the redox potential compared to unsubstituted BQ/HQ, increase the solubility, and stabilise the quinone in alkaline aqueous media. 4.2.3.1 DHTA For the dicarboxy-substituted species DHTA, CV reveals rather complicated voltammetry on a GC WE. Several sets or single ill-defined peaks were observed at approximately −0.8, −0.25, 0.25, and 0.35 V vs. SHE, as seen in Figure 4.2 (c) (solid salmon line). The absence of cathodic peaks related to the anodic peaks at approximately 0.2 V and 0.35 V vs. SHE suggests that the oxidised species of DHTA is not stable at pH 14.
