Performance of the Cool Water Station is summarized in Table 9.2 below. The Cool Water plant has operated successfully with Utah run-of-mine coal with 0.4% sulfur, Illinois #6 coal with 3.1% sulfur, and Pittsburg #8 coal with 2.9% sulfur. The sulfur removal process in the plant yields about 99.6% pure elemental sulfur, which can be sold for the production of sulfuric acid and fertilizers. The slag produced by the gasifier is considered nonhazardous and suitable for the production of road-making materials or cement.
