market absorbing 65% of the production and Asia-Pacific comes second with 13%, while Europe accounted for 9 %. Latin America received 6% of the shipments closely followed by the Middle East and Africa at 5%. Piston-engine aircraft shipments are highly concentrated on a few OEMs, with Cirrus and Cessna dominating the market with half of the total sales. Approximately 87% of the market is dominated by five manufacturers, leaving only 13% for the remaining twenty companies that one day were strong competitors in this market. Refer to Figure 1 for a list of the five best sellers. Figure 1 – The piston-engine aircraft bestsellers But, what is the state of the piston-engine aircraft industry? If an industry is deemed as mature when sales are not growing, the customer's basis is vanishing, there is a lack of significant innovation or is facing mergers and acquisitions, for sure the piston-engine aircraft industry currently operates into a mature market. After a spike in sales at the beginning of the 2000s, deliveries of new piston-engine airplanes, as per Figure 2, are relatively flat for the past nine years, and chances are it will stay like that for the remaining years of the decade. Figure 2: Piston Engine Airplane Shipments (1995–2017)8 Another characteristic of the mature piston engine aircraft industry is the lack of significant innovation. Technology and market conditions prevailing in the late 40s or earlier 50s defined the dominant aircraft architecture in use to this day, with the piston engine on the front, passengers, and wings in the middle and a tail on the back. One of the most famous representatives is the Beechcraft Bonanza that, in one format or another, has been in continuous production for 70 years, since 1947.
