unique among the major engine modules. Its primary purpose is to develop the functionality of the control system in advance of the rest of the engine in order to minimize the risk to the turbomachinery and enable the immediate acquisition of aeromechanical and performance data at FETT. In order to perform this testing and obtain an accurate representation of the true control system performance to be expected at FETT, hardware with the same functional characteristics as the "production" configuration is needed. Accomplishing the overall "desired" control system development program from the upper chart in Figure 1-1, however, would result in the control system hardware and software being several months late to FETT, thus creating a significant program risk. In order to meet program schedule constraints, a "right-to-left" plan culminating in delivery of functionally verified hardware and software to FETT is actually used and is represented by the lower chart on the figure. At an appropriate point during or near the end of the Engine Preliminary Design phase, the design of most, if not all, major engine modules is launched, including the control system. This is done with the basic (quite optimistic) assumption that all hardware delivered to the First Engine to Test (FETT) will be of a production configuration. Note that the CLB, manufacture, and design subtasks drive the start of the "actual" control system development task to be nearly aligned with the start ofthe turbomachinery and exhaust system design tasks. At this point in the program, the control system requirement uncertainty is at a high level as indicated by the dotted curve on the figure. This uncertainty is reduced from a High to a Moderate level with the completion of the turbomachinery and exhaust system design tasks since most of the key control system requirements are defined by the design of the rest of the engine modules.
