opportunity to develop assembly processes and perform initial physical integration activities. Once this initial prototype system has been assembled, the process begins traversing up the right side of the system Vee during which system validation occurs. Although not shown in this model, many companies such as Ford and Pratt & Whitney execute the validation process in a manner that is a mirror image to the system design process. Validation begins at the "bottom" (i.e. the detail piece-part level) and progresses to higher levels of aggregation in build-up fashion. This model contains Refinement activities that encompass the bottom three steps of the process (Detailed Design, Prototype Build, System Validation). As design shortfalls or optimization opportunities are encountered during the validation process, design iterations and subsequent retesting occur until the gap is closed between the system's requirements and its demonstrated capabilities. This iteration and the issues surrounding it is the subject of this work. Figure 1-6 represents the activities shown in Figure 1-4, but in Gantt chart format.
