This refinement represents a revisiting of the target specifications set prior to concept selection, taking into account the technological constraints that are now better understood. The design team must make some difficult trade-offs between performance, cost, weight, safety and many other requirements. It is extremely rare that aerospace components defined at this stage meet all target specs initially proposed for them since, in actuality, the real goal in achieving customer satisfaction is to meet all technical requirements while minimizing product cost and weight, not merely achieving a target value. It has been said that if the initial design of a component meets all target specs, the component was not adequately challenged.
