1.3.5 Develop This step represents manufacture of initial hardware to support subsystem integration testing leading up to first engine to test (FETT). For components that enjoy a low level of risk (i.e. design requirements are fairly firm), the initial hardware configuration in some cases will be the final production version. For those with high risk, functionally representative GTA hardware is chosen and integrated into initial subsystem testing. At this stage, some uncertainty regarding interactions between components can be resolved, but typically, a significant amount of uncertainty will remain until the initial engines are built and run. 1.3.6 Test As the name implies, this step is focused on verification (i.e. ensuring that the engine, subsystems, and components meet requirements) and validation (ensuring the engine, subsystems, and components function as intended in the target environment, meeting customer needs). The data generated during initial engine testing at sea level and simulated altitude conditions will resolve the vast majority of uncertainty remaining in the control system requirements. A small subset of requirements such as those associated with the integrated thermal management system, installed engine bay environment, and external nozzle flap loads cannot be finalized without flight testing. Those types ofrisks must be managed and mitigated by simulation and test with simulated inputs and environments. It should be noted that, in the current product development process, a significant portion of verification (i.e. flight certification) testing for control system components is performed in a bench environment (i.e. off the engine) at a component and/or subsystem level. Compared to other engine hardware, control system components are allowed to perform a greater percentage ofverification testing in this manner primarily because they are, for the most part, installed 34
