2.2 Functional Decomposition 2.2.1 Engine Control Needs In a general sense, the needs of the engine that must be satisfied by the control system can be functionally decomposed as shown in Figure 2-2. The boxes with solid lines represent functions present on all gas turbine engines while the boxes with dotted lines exist on only those models requiring that functionality. For example, not all engines require variable geometry (e.g. variable compressor vanes or exhaust nozzle throat area), but all require metered fuel, an ignition source, and some method of communicating thrust request from the pilot or flight control system (mechanical, or digital) to the engine. The airframe is also shown at the same level as the engine with input to the "Manage Air Vehicle Heat Load" function. This function is becoming more prevalent on engines in modem aircraft that have integrated thermal management systems. The purpose of a thermal management system is, as the name would imply, to manage the heat generated by the subsystems on the aircraft by limiting heat generation as much as possible and by efficiently utilizing available heat sinks such as the ambient environment and fuel burned by the engine.
