Similar to the progression oftechnology ofthe T2 sensor, the function category of communicating has progressed significantly over the past few decades. In general, communication concepts utilized between engine control system components and between the engine and airframe have progressed from mechanical to electrical to electronic (i.e. digital). Let us examine the function of engine-to-airframe communication. This communication function can be thought of as a two-way exchange of information with different data associated with the different paths. The data normally communicated from engine to airframe generally serves the purpose of allowing the monitoring of critical engine functions such as turbine temperature, rotor speeds, and oil pressure. Concepts that provide this function in general have progressed in the following manner: * * * Mechanical interfaces such as connecting a tube from the engine oil system to a gauge in the cockpit. Electrical analog interfaces such as providing an analog voltage signal from a transmitter in the engine oil system to a gauge or display in the cockpit. Electronic digital interfaces such as an ARINC or MIL-STD-1553B in which a sensor in the oil system is read by the electronic engine control which transmits oil pressure in digital format to an airframe computer, which in tern transmits the data to cockpit display computer for use by the pilot. The data transmitted from airframe to engine normally consists of pilot or flight control computer commands for thrust request and in certain cases thrust vectoring (thrust reversing for commercial aircraft or thrust vectoring for some military fighters).
