4 ANALYSIS OF CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS 4.1 IntegratedProductDevelopment Process Gas turbine engine product development at Pratt & Whitney (PW) is accomplished in accordance with the Integrated Product Development (IPD) process, which drives developers, from the outset, to consider all aspects ofproduct life cycle from early concept through development to retirement and disposal. Figure 4-1 shows the relationship between IPD activities at the program, system, module, and part levels at PW19. In a similar manner, Hamilton Sundstrand (HS) has adopted the IPD process for aerospace component development. Figure 4-2 shows the HS Passport Review Process20 that supports the PW IPD process shown in Figure 4-1. HS passport component reviews (PO-P4) are held at key decision gates throughout the program, and are aligned with similar decision gates in the PW process. The HS PO-P4 reviews have been superimposed onto the PW process to show the connectivity between the processes. It should be noted that the HS Passport Review process is generic to all HS customers (Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, General Electric, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, etc.) and may require minor tailoring to align with different customer's processes. HS and PW hold a special relationship resulting from a reorganization orchestrated by the companies' parent, United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in January of2001. This reorganization involved transferring the entire controls and externals organization (i.e. the "Module Center") from PW to HS, which transformed HS from a component supplier to a system provider.
