penalties. The detail design phase culminates in Critical Design Review (CDR), which corresponds to a P2 review in the HS Passport Process. At this point, all analysis and detail design aspects should be complete such that manufacturing can begin. Over the past decade, increasing emphasis has been placed on early development of manufacturing processes in order to learn out the production process during the course of the development program. This strategy has proven successful in avoiding "production transition" issues associated with manufacturing development parts from one source and using another source for full-scale production. This up-front development activity, while proving to be a wise investment, puts additional pressure on the component development process by forcing early design decisions. Manufacturing lead times vary widely depending on the component's complexity, manufacturing process, selected material, and design tolerances. Lead times can range from a few weeks for simple valves to nearly a year for components with complex castings or forgings. The manufacturing phase is represented on Figure 4-3 by the symbol ) . This phase culminates in first hardware delivery, a major milestone in the component development program. 4.2.3 Control Component Development Test Referencing back to Figure 1-5 (Generic PDP System Vee Model), we are now ready to begin the journey up the right-hand side ofthe Vee (system verification, validation, production, and field service). The Ford System Vee Product Development Process model emphasizes system hierarchy in the product design (left-hand side) and product validation (right-hand side) processes. The design process utilizes sequential decomposition from system to subsystem to detail parts while system validation proceeds in a mirrored fashion beginning at the detail part level, progressing upward through subsystems, ending with validation at the vehicle level.
