quickly followed by a second test engine at simulated altitude conditions in an altitude test facility. One of the most prominent is the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) located near Tullahoma, Tennessee, which is owned by the US Government and operated by a private contractor. All major jet engine manufacturers send engines to this facility to undergo development testing prior to becoming flight qualified. This activity is represented on Figure 4-3 as symbol 0 A typical engine development program will allow at least one major hardware iteration between FETT and the configuration freeze for Initial Flight Release (IFR). IFR is considered a major engine milestone and is the anchor from which the majority of the engine program up to that point is planned. Assuming a reasonably successful ground development program occurs, flight qualification hardware is manufactured to the final configuration resulting from the ground development program. Control system hardware, being mostly mounted on the outside of the engine, normally enjoys a much more benign environment in an open-air test stand than enclosed in a minimally ventilated engine bay in an aircraft. Therefore, the majority of control system components must undergo a series of flight qualification tests in a simulated installed environment. These are represented on Figure 4-3 as the symbol and include simulations of the thermal environment (hot and cold ambient air and fuel), vibratory environment, EMI/lightning environment, and contaminated fuel environment. Due to these environmental extremes, this battery of testing is much more stringent than the environment encountered on ground development engines.
