* Maximize flexibility. The business case is substantially strengthened by allowing detail subassemblies to be "mixed and matched" using common interfaces. This provides the flexibility to fully explore the design space to ascertain the optimum solution. In order to maximize utilization across multiple programs, a Risk Assessment Matrix for the most recent military and commercial jet engine development programs should be compiled based on design requirement uncertainties that were present early in the programs. Functional features assessed as high or moderate risk should be compiled for both programs and compared for common aspects. GTA architecture should be defined to matchflexibility to designfeature uncertainty. For example, in the case of actuators, two design features than may carry significant requirement uncertainty (reference Figure 5-1) are piston size and slew rate. An architecture that would provide a family of solutions might look like the hardware shown in Figure 5-2. The figure shows a series of housing/piston sizes that can address a range of load uncertainty and a series of Electrohydraulic Servo Valve (EHSV) flow ratings (the L/M/H labels denote low, medium, or high flow rates) that can address a range of slew rates.
