Flow capacity can be limited with software or by a hardware adjustable stop for failure mode testing. 5.2.2 Interface Considerations Substituting a non-production hardware configuration into the early development program carries some inherent risk. One would have to question the benefit of the revised development framework if an unwanted surprise reared its ugly head while during the throes of flight clearance testing. Once the risk assessment described in the previous section identifies candidate components, careful consideration must be given to the potential risk incurred by non- Bill of Material (BOM) interfaces. This interface risk assessment must include ALL interfaces for the proposed GTA hardware - physical and functional. The goal of GTA hardware is to be a "drop-in" replacement for the production hardware for which it is a surrogate. GTA hardware can be divided into two major categories - engine-mounted and non- engine-mounted. For the engine-mounted category, a component that does not provide physical interchangeability not only drives risk, but also results in the additional program cost of modifying the interfacing hardware to allow its use. Therefore, physical interfaces for engine- mounted GTA hardware should be defined on the same schedule as non-GTA hardware (as if the production version was to be used on FETT) if possible. This may serve to limit the design space, but this must be traded with the program cost and risk of iterating the interfacing parts once final design requirements are defined. For example, if a GTA nozzle actuator is needed due to nozzle load uncertainty, the design team should strive to define the design of the physical attachments for the production configuration and implement them on the GTA hardware.
