PW/HS programs with the intent of expanding across all HS product lines. Rather than selecting a particular EMID supplier and designing all EMID physical interfaces around that supplier's parts (hence reducing cost benefits through competition), design flexibility can be maintained by providing adequate room in the GTA hardware to accommodate different EMID suppliers' hardware. The EMID supplier could provide initial development units for GTA hardware that are electrically equivalent to the "production" configuration, but are mechanically packaged to interface with the GTA hardware. This would result in a small development program NRE cost, but would pay off in the long run through reduced interface risk. 5.2.3 Functional Considerations At this stage, GTA components and their physical and functional interface configurations have been defined. One more decision that is significant needs to be made before the implementation phase and this is the functional performance of the GTA hardware. Considering that the primary reason for delaying design decisions in the first place was to deal with functional requirement uncertainty, deciding on the functional capabilities for the GTA hardware is a very important step. The easy answer would be to provide functional performance at levels that cover the nominal prediction plus uncertainty. In the case of a nozzle actuator with a nominal maximum load prediction of 10,000 pounds and an uncertainty of 4,000 pounds, a GTA actuator with a 14,000-pound capability and the features needed to actually measure the load reacted (such as extend and retract pressure taps) would be provided. This additional load-carrying capability adds no additional risk to the development program since the closed-loop functionality of the effector loop will result in scheduling only enough pressure across the power piston in the actuator to exactly react the imparted load from the flap train.
