Example of Actuation Capability Design Space Figure 5-5 shows an example of the "front end" of a simplified fuel system optimization model utilizing the Excel Solver tool that attempts to illustrate the concepts of modifying certain system parameters, applying constraints, and optimizing a set of output parameters based on established targets. The variables are the yellow-colored cells in the upper left of the figure, and are the parameters that Solver sequentially modifies as it attempts to reach the goals while satisfying the constraints. The variables selected are the piston size of three different actuator effectors, the impeller diameter and depth of a fuel pump, and the displacement of a positive displacement fuel pump. These typical parameters are changed during the fuel system design process as attempts are made to satisfy design constraints at minimum cost, weight, and heat load. To the right ofthe actuator variables are cells for the number of actuators. These are manual inputs to allow quick assessments of different numbers of actuators in the event that design constraints with the desired number of actuators cannot be met. These values could potentially be incremented automatically by linking the output of solver to these cells.
