Though the long cowl configuration exhibits an overall lower maximal SPL, the low-frequency mixing area is in fact longer compared to the short-cowl engine; it extends by about two nozzle diameter upstream as well as downstream. At higher frequencies, there is significantly more noise with relatively uniform di- rectivity at the nozzle exit plane for the long cowl configuration. As the flow is pre-mixed inside the cowling before being exhausted into the environment, the average flow velocity of the jet is slower compared to the SC engine. At the nozzle exit plane, however, the flow velocity is greater, as the SC core flow is sur- rounded by the slow and cold bypass flow.
