DESIGN, INSTALLATION, AND TEST OF A STEAM INJECTION SYSTEM ON AN EARLY FRAME 3 GAS TURBINE IN A COMBINED CYCLE PIPELINE COMPRESSOR STATION by S. Paul Mohan Manager, Compressor Performance Group Robert D. Underwood Senior Transmission Engineer Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation Houston, Texas and David A. Little Senior Engineer Liburdi Engineering, Limited Hamilton, Ontario, Canada S. Paul Mohan is Manager of the Com pressor Performance Group at Transconti nentalGasPipeLineCorporation,Houston, Texas. He is responsible for projects aimed at improving reliability, operability, and maintenance of pipeline compressor stations. Mr. Mohan spent thefirst four yearsofhis engineering career at Dresser Clark in Ole an, New York. He was involved in extensive rotordynamics work and conducted tests on new bearing and seal designs for high pres sure barrel compressors. For the next six years, he was with Exxon Chemical Company. He provided consulting assistance on equip ment troubleshooting, vibration monitoring, and retrofit projects. He participated in the startup of Exxon's largest olefin plant. In 1982, he joined Transco and participated in the commissioning of the Great Plains Gasification Project. Mr. Mohan received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from 1. /.T. Madras, India and an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engi neering from the University of Virginia (1972). He has written several technical papers and is a member of ASME and the Vibration Institute. Robert D. Underwood is a Senior Trans mission Engineer for Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation in Houston, Texas. He started work in the Engineering Depart ment (1979) as a Mechanical Engineer with responsibility for design of new equipment installations, including skid mounted gas compressors, air compressors, and the heat recovery steam generators installed on gas turbines. He is currently responsible for evaluating and improving compressor reli & Root, Inc., inHouston, Texas. He worked in thePipelineEngineer ing Section on the design of pipeline and related mechanical facili- ties. The last two years at Brown & Root, he was involved in pipeline construction projects. Mr. Underwood received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineer ing/romthe UniversityofTexasatElPaso(1972)andisaregistered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. David A. Little is a Senior Engineer with Liburdi Engineering, Limited. He received his BASe degree from the University of British Columbia (1970), and has worked with Orenda Engines, Westing house Canada, and Pratt & Whitney in the area of gas turbine performance and aero dynamics. At Liburdi Engineering, he is involved with gas turbine and combined cycle analy sis, performance improvements, steam in jection, and cooling system revisions. ABSTRACT The Frame 3 Gas Turbines have proven to be reliable drivers for pipeline compressor stations over the last 25 years. At Transco's combined cycle compressor station, a steam injection system for power augmentation was developed and found to be a cost effec tive alternative to the OEM's turbine upgrade offering. The design, build, and test of this unique steam injection system required with the "straight-through combustion" configuration of the early Frame 3 Gas Turbines is described. Due to the unavailability of basic thermodynamic design data and constraints from the OEM, three gas turbines at the station were performance tested. A performance model for the gas turbine was developed and validated. It was supplemented with steam system test data to develop the combined cycle model of the station. The model was used to assess the feasibility of, and to provide a design basis for the steam injection system. Overall combined cycle efficiency changes with steam injection system were evaluated. ability and performance. Thefirst seven years of Mr. Underwood's career was with Brown 137
