application, and then baked for 15 min at 343°C (650°F). These coatings can be cured at temperatures as low as 177°C (350°F) by extending the cure time, but the toughness and durability of the coating decreases as the cure temperature is reduced below 343°C. The entire deposition processes were performed by two authorized applicators, Orion ®® Industries (for Teflon and Xylan coatings) and Southwest Impreglon (for PEEK, ®® Impreglon and Fluorolon coatings), and further information on the application method for PTFE- and PEEK-based coatings can be found in Refs. The average surface roughness values of the coatings were in the range from 1.2 μm to 3.3 μm. As expected, the hardness of the polymeric coatings was found to be lower than the substrate hardness.
