also reports on the specific collector substrate, developed for the purpose of 3D electrode architecture, like vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNT)135 or CNT grown on a commercial products such as GDL104. (a) (b) (d) Chapter 1: Literature review Figure 1-12. Some examples of different incorporation of a porous carbon collector: ‘catholyte’ cell (a)134; as an interlayer (b)137; ‘composite’ electrode (c)136; binder-free sulfur melted electrode (d)135. Generally speaking, all these selected examples show superior performances as compared with Al-based collectors, at constant active mass loadings. As an example, pioneer work in this field was presented by Elazari et al.124, where sulfur got impregnated into the fibers cloth, reaching the sulfur loading of 6.5 mg cm-2, and stable capacity of ~ 1000 mAh g-1 for 80 cycles at 0.98 mA cm-2 current density. However, it is also important noticing that the risk of using such porous collectors, even if displaying excellent performances when taking into account sulfur mass only (mAh gsulfur-1), may lead to drastic decrease of the cell practical energy density (both gravimetric and volumetric, since they are usually heavier, and sometimes even 10 times thicker than the classical Al foil). Therefore, the complete mass of the electrode should be kept in mind, as demonstrated by Hagen et al.104. 30
