Zircon is one of the oldest earth minerals and is a common mineral in mete- orite and moon rocks. SiO2 content in the host rocks of zircon grains increases from carbonatite to granitic pegmatite. This is called “mineral fractionation,” simply, mafic elements such as magnesium and iron are first removed from magma during crystallization, which leads to silica-rich magma.
