CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2, the composition and phase structure in this volcanic ash are much more complicated. And this different composition and phase structure may lead different kind of degradation mechanisms. The objectives of this study can be separated to four parts. 1) Study of volcanic ash. The chemical composition, phase structure, surface morphology, and melting temperature of volcanic ash will be analysed in this part. 2) Study of degradation mechanisms of TBCs attacked by volcanic ash. 3) Investigate coating material for protection from volcanic ash attack. 4) Making a protective coating on the top of TBCs using sol-gel based method.
