7. Next, light the end of a wooden splint and allow it to burn for a few seconds. Explain to the students that if there is pure carbon dioxide in the bag, the splint will immediately extinguish due to there being virtually no oxygen, which is necessary for fire. 8. Open the bag and slowly insert the splint; it should extinguish immediately. If appropriate for the age of the students, invite them to relight the splint and reinsert it into the bag. This can be repeated numerous times if desired. CAUTION: Do not let the flame touch the side of the bag. It will melt immediately. 9.
