BASIC HEAT PUMP THEORY By: Lloyd A. Mullen By: Lloyd G. Williams Service Department, York Division, Borg-Warner Corporation Figure 26F03B Capillary Tube-Expansion Value Combination Figure 26F04 pictures use of a capillary tube for cooling and thermal expansion valve for heating cycle. Note the two check valves in series — parallel with expansion valve and capillary tube. These are used to direct refrigerant flow either through or around expansion devices as desired. The check valve in parallel with capillary tube is open on heating and closed on cooling cycle. Conversely, check valve in parallel with heating expansion valve is closed on heating and open on cooling cycle.
