speed was set to match the heating capacity of R410A. As shown in Figure 2.4, when the compressor speed was set to match the R410A cooling capacity: the higher capacity of R744 resulted in an even larger improvement in net heating COP at the lower outdoor temperatures as compared to when the heating capacities were matched. Because of the slight capacity/ heating COP trade-off at moderate temperatures, the R744 advantage could be increased depending on the application. A comparison of the thermodynamic cycle for R744 and R410A for the matched heat pump capacity at the 8.3oC outdoor temperature is shown in Figure 2.5. 13.0 12.0 11.0 10.0 9.0 8.0 7.0 6.0 5.0 Estimated household load: 7.75 kW @ 0 C, 0 kW@ 18.3 C Reduced dependance on back-up heat source at lower outdoor temperature for CO2 R410A 5.00 4.00 3.00 2.00 R410A 1.00 -20 -10 0 10 20 -10 0 Outdoor Temperature (C) R744 R744 Figure 2.3 Effect of increased capacity of R744 at lower outdoor temperatures on overall heating efficiency (matched heating capacity) 10 Outdoor Temperature (C) 20 13.0 12.0 11.0 10.0 9.0 8.0 7.0 6.0 5.0 Estimated household load:7.75kW@0 C, 0 kW @ 1 8. 3 C CO2 5.00 4.00 3.00 2.00 1.00 R410A Reduced dependance on back-up heat source at lower outdoor temperature for CO2 R41 0A R744 -20 -10 0 10 20 Outdoor Temperature (C) -10 0 10 20 Outdoor Temperature (C) Figure 2.4 Effect of increased capacity of R744 at lower outdoor temperatures on overall heating efficiency (matched cooling capacity) 7 Capacity(kW) Capacity(kW) Net Heating COP (Inc.
