Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling • Stage 3 − The resulting hot, high-pressure refrigerant vapor enters the condenser where heat is transferred to ambient air or water. Inside the condenser, the refrigerant condenses into a liquid. • Stage 4 − This high pressure liquid refrigerant then flows from the condenser to the expansion device, which reduces its pressure. At this low pressure, a small portion of the refrigerant boils (or flashes), cooling the remaining liquid refrigerant to the desired evaporator temperature. The cool mixture of liquid and vapor refrigerant repeats the cycle. The refrigeration cycle remains in continuous operation whenever the compressor is running. This cycle is used in refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners, dehumidifiers, central air conditioning systems, water coolers, vending machines and other heat-moving machines. 1.3. Heat Pump Cycle Heat pump uses the same principle of vapor compression refrigerant cycle and has the same basic components like a traditional air conditioner (compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion device), except that it can reverse the refrigeration cycle or in other words, swap the functions of the two heat exchangers (condenser and evaporator). Refer to the schematic below and note the application is reversed for heating mode. (Note the components are not reversed physically). 7
