Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling • Cheaper to install and the shortest payoff period compared to other types of heat pumps. • Energy efficient – heat output is 3 to 4 times the energy input. • Compact and quiet system. The disadvantage is the significant efficiency drops in cold weather. The delivered capacity of a heat pump will be at its lowest temperature when space heating is needed most. Therefore, an ASHP must have an alternate supplemental heating device to overcome the capacity shortfall, but generally, if the outside temperature regularly drops below freezing where you live, heat pumps are not a good idea. It is less common to use ASHPs to provide domestic hot water due to the higher temperature gap between the heat source (air) and the need to keep hot water above 60°C. This may require a supplementary form of heating to reach the necessary temperature levels. ******* 30
