How Do Heat Pumps Work? To recap: • An electric heat pump is a refrigeration machine that extracts heat from one medium (water or air) and moves it to another location of the same medium, or to a second medium. • Most heat pumps move heat using a vapor compression cycle. We are concerned with air source heat pumps. • A heat pump's refrigeration system consists of a compressor and two coils made of copper or aluminum tubing (one indoors and one outside), which are surrounded by aluminum fins to aid heat transfer. o o o o o In heating mode, liquid refrigerant in the outside coils extracts heat from the air and evaporates into a gas. The indoor coils release heat from the refrigerant as it condenses back into a liquid. A reversing valve, near the compressor, can change the direction of the refrigerant flow for cooling as well as for defrosting the outdoor coils in winter. • Residential heat pumps are dual-mode and have reversing valves that can provide separate heating and cooling. This type uses a refrigeration cycle for cooling and a reverse-refrigeration cycle for heating. Heat pumps work very well if they are installed properly, and if the homes they are installed in are “tight” and well insulated. Heat pump variable speeds provide humidity control better than standard central air conditioners. PROPERTY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, 2020. DO NOT ALTER. 16
