Ductless Mini Split Considerations Considerations Has multiple indoor units, does not move air through The ultra-low NOx furnace requirement adds at least $350 per unit to the cost to traditional split systems. Key components: Gas line to furnace Flue pipe Outdoor condenser and compressor Air handler, furnace and fan, with return air duct Ducts and diffusers ducts; variable speed compressor; modeling credit for the units in conditioned space. #3. Ductless heat pump split system, multi-head unit heating and air conditioning Key components: • Outdoor unit with compressor and outdoor coil (shown here on the ground) • Indoor fan coil units (“heads”), typically wall mounted (but we will show several options) • Refrigerant line sets, one to each indoor unit • Notice this is a much cleaner installation than the two systems we looked at previously. Considerations • With multiple indoor units, the advantages of not moving air through ducts include reduction of energy loss, reduced cost of installation, and reduced space requirements. • The variable speed compressor also saves energy. • This system earns modelling credit because the units are located in conditioned space. • Easy to install but have more mechanical units than conventional ducted system. • There are more filters to keep clean, but we avoid the new requirement for MERV-13 filters at the return with a ductless system like this. • With this type of system the code requires a head in every room in order to get the modeling credit. • Some people do have a negative aesthetic impression of a ductless wall unit.
