Ducted Mini Split System Considerations Considerations 1 or more indoor units (i.e., 2-story houses) and short duct runs, uses low The ultra-low NOx furnace requirement adds at least $350 per unit to the cost to traditional split systems. Key components: Gas line to furnace Flue pipe Outdoor condenser and compressor Air handler, furnace and fan, with return air duct Ducts and diffusers static pressure through the ducts. May have separate temperature zones. Concealed ducts with only the return grille and diffusers visible. Variable speed compressor. #4. Ducted mini split system with fan coils and ductwork in conditioned space May be the most painless option for CA builders because the appearance in the home is no different than traditional split systems and first costs are similar to split systems. Key components: • Outdoor unit with condenser and compressor (shown here on the ground) • One or more indoor fan coil units (concealed duct air handlers). (The fan coils may be located in a drop ceiling.) • Refrigerant line set; connecting wire provides power to the indoor unit(s) from the outdoor unit Considerations • Better aesthetics, hidden hardware • MERV-13 filter required at return grille • Ducted HPs have a special exception to the 2019 Title 24 fan watt draw test requirement. Instead of having to meet the lower .45 W/cfm that a gas furnace air handler does, a ducted HP only needs to meet the .58 W/cfm test requirement. • Gives better air filtration because of long duty cycles of low HP fan (relative to split systems) • Short duct runs are utilized because these use low static pressure through the ducts and can’t use a traditional duct system. Also, these may have separate temperature zone comfort control for each fan coil. • Concealed ducts are typically short; only the return register grille and diffusers are visible within the conditioned space. • Indoor fan coils are inside the thermal boundary in conditioned space, which earns the VCHP credit. This makes them operate more efficiently. PROPERTY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, 2020. DO NOT ALTER. 32
