Flexible Mini Split Configurations Considerations The ultra-low NOx furnace requirement adds at least $350 per unit to the cost to traditional split systems. Key components: Gas line to furnace Flue pipe Outdoor condenser and compressor Air handler, furnace and fan, with return air duct Ducts and diffusers Ceiling Cassette Ducted Heat Pump Register Directional Air Louver (punkah) Mini split system with fan coils and ductwork in the conditioned space Key components: • These three indoor units could be in the same house • Kitchen served by a ceiling cassette fan coil unit • Beds & baths served by a concealed ducted heat pump fan coil in the drop ceiling • One or multiple outdoor units linked to them Considerations • With new homes built with “great enclosures” (air tightness and insulation), the greatly reduced heat gain results in a reduced air flow (CFM) requirement to keep the house comfortable. • This facilitates small ducts and the ability to have those ducts in the conditioned space. With reduced CFM, a register or louver can be designed to throw the air across the room from a more centralized short small duct design. • The velocity for this throw across the ceiling gets the air to the other side of the room, keeping the entire area comfortable all the time without any noticeable discomfort from the throw. • The directional air louver (also called a punkah) shown on the right, is a special device to achieve this effect. This low flow higher velocity design also facilitates the advanced variable speed compressor and fans, a paradigm shift for residential air conditioning. The new variable flow will keep a fairly continuously operating low air flow to maintain comfort, and the extended air flow periods accomplish additional filtering.
