The higher the SEER, the more efficient SEER is for cooling efficiency only There are two types of tests to determine SEER: -Single Speed Compressor (82° ambient) -Variable-speed or multiple-speed compressor test (weighted ambient test) We hear a lot of talk that SEER ratings of heat pumps are “too good to be true.” What is SEER? • SEER is a cooling efficiency rating. • SEER is the total heat removed from the conditioned space during the annual cooling season, (in British thermal units (Btu)), divided by the total electrical energy consumed by the heat pump during the same season (in watt-hours). • The higher the SEER, the higher the initial cost. However, the energy savings pays back several times the higher initial investment. • There are two types of tests to determine a heat pump’s SEER: o Single-speed compressor test. The unit is tested at an outdoor temperature of 82° F and an indoor temperature of 80° F. o Variable-speed or multiple-speed compressor test: performance is measured at various ambient temperatures. • When a heat pump can operate efficiently at part load (with less cycling losses), it produces higher SEER ratings not attainable with single-speed compressors. • The SEER rating accounts for several important factors: part-load efficiency, energy consumption in standby mode, and varying load (part load) requirements. • Both types of tests are fair and produce reliable SEER ratings.
