Promotes Energy Efficiency before Solar Panels First must meet Efficiency EDR - a score representing the building’s energy use accounting for envelope, HVAC system, water heating, etc. Then must meet Total EDR by adding enough renewable energy (typically solar panels) to offset the Efficiency EDR of the home New Compliance Metric for 2019: Energy Design Rating (EDR) • EDR is California’s way of requiring all new homes to be built “net zero” (or near net zero) by 2020. Cost-effective upgrades reduce building energy load first and reduce energy costs for years. • Energy Design Rating (EDR) is a rating method that lets you compare building projects in terms of energy efficiency. - The lower the score, the better: 0 = “zero net energy” home 100 = really inefficient building • EDR is indexed to 100 for an IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) 2006 Standard Design home. • Score could be higher than 100 if worse than IECC 2006 Standard Design. (This is a way to harmonize with what RESNET is doing with their HERS ratings nationwide as well.) • A typical new home needs Efficiency EDR of 48 to comply with 2019 code. • Total EDR will be 20-25 to fully meet code after adding solar, battery, + other renewables. • EDR performance of a home should be about 5 points better with a variable capacity heat pump than with a traditional split system.
