The sorption capacity is relatively low, and they are most effective for the removal of toxic agents present in relatively low concentrations, for example in water173. The sorption of ionisable organic solutes (phenol and aniline) by clinoptilolite modified by hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) cations has been reported174. It was found that planar nitrate anions sorb more effectively on the SMZ surfaces than do chromate anions which are tetrahedral. Indeed when sulfate or nitrate anions were present simultaneously, the sorption of chromate was found to be inhib- ited75. The processes involved in the sorption of chromate, selenate and sulfate anions by SMZ have been studied in some detail from which the sorption data for each anion were fitted well according to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption equation176.
