However, this acid further combines with R744 to give a hydronium ion, which has the effect of an activated acid and reacts with construction materials such as steel. The acid attack shown in Figure 46 is a form of R744 corrosion that occurs in flowing environments, and occurs where a protective iron carbonate coating is worn away in areas.
