Literature review 2.8.1 ModellingofFuelCellPermeability The fuel cell performance (power density) can be evaluated by the membrane selectivity. The ratio of proton conductivity to methanol permeability is known as membrane selectivity [147]. Therefore, improving the membrane selectivity can improve the fuel cell performance. However, Li et al [148] suggested that fuel cell performance could be limited either by methanol permeability or proton conductivity. They proposed a model which indicates that the fuel cell power density will only offer significant improvement if the permeability is reduced. The following model was determined by Li at al [148]. If the fuel cell is limited by permeability, density is π= 25(1βπΌ)ππΓππ (0.5+ππ)(ππβπΌππ) ππ = π π 0.7πΉ πΌ=ππ( π ) ππ 1+π π = π½ πΏππ πΏπ·ππ P: power density (W/cm2) ia: anode current density (A/cm2) ic: cathode current density (A/cm2) Ξ²: methanol permeability (cm2/s) L: the membrane thickness (ΞΌm) Lba : the thickness of the anode backing layer (ΞΌm) Dba : is the effective diffusivity of methanol in the backing layer then the power (2.1) Based on the above model equation, Li et al[148] constructed a graph model that evaluates the DMFC performance in terms of selectivity. In their graph model, if MEA selectivity is above dashed line in the plot then the fuel cell is limited by crossover. The fuel cell is ohmic limited when fuel cell point is below dashed line.
