Method and characterisation 3 EXPERIMENTAL WORK AND CHARACTERISATION TECHNIQUES 3.1 Introduction The aim of this work is to reduce methanol crossover which reduces the fuel cell efficiency due to the mixed potential taking place at the cathode. This will be attempted by modifying the binding layer at anode of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The modification of the binding layer was carried out by mixing Nafion with zeolite (mordenite type) or graphene oxide. This chapter explains the methods used to fabricate the standard MEAs and inorganic/organic modified binding layer. All MEAs (standard MEA and modified binding layer MEA), were prepared in-house and tested in a DMFC. In this work, the anode and cathode electrodes were composed of three layers. Briefly these layers were gas diffusion layer, catalyst layer, and binding layer (barrier layer) for each electrode. Therefore, a detailed description of the preparation of these layers will be covered in this chapter. The chapter will also describe the modification of mordenite with silane coupling agents and the preparation of graphene oxide which was used in the modified binding layer. But before that, a detailed description of the characterization techniques (used in evaluating the standard and modified binding layer MEAs in DMFC) will be presented including scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and distribution of particle size. 3.2 Characterization and Methods Different characterization techniques were carried out on the materials used in fabricating standard MEA and modified binding layer MEA. These techniques include XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, Zetasizer, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
