Method and characterisation Figure 3.4 Schematic SEM photon formation [151] The basic principle of the SEM is to detect the secondary electrons and use them to build an image. The secondary electrons are attracted toward the SE detector through a grid (attached in front of the SE detector). The scan direct the beam at specific spot, the number of the secondary electron recorded in the SE detector and the signal is amplified and displayed. The scan directs the beam at different spot, and the measurement is repeated creating another dot on the monitor. This goes until many secondary electrons are recorded leading to a natural looking image of sample displayed on the monitor [152]. SEM technique depends on the electron current or reflected ray from the sample surface but the final image is related to the sample surface rather than to the properties of the secondary emission of the sample. In SEM, the sample surface must be conductive (electrically) to assure that all electrons are pointed at sample surface. Due to the dependency between the scattered signals and the generated image, low electrical conductivity materials are usually coated with a thin layer of gold via spin coater prior the SME run. In this work, the scanning electron microscopy used was (SEM, model FEI Quanta 200). The following explains the steps conducted for SEM image.
