Method and characterisation 3.2.2.1 SEM sample preparation method 0.5 grams of mordenite was placed in a glass vial with 5.0 ml acetone. The mixture was sonicated for 10 minutes. By using pipet, few drops of the mixture was placed on SEM stub and kept in the oven at 60°C for 10 minutes. The stub was coated with gold via spatter coater for 120 second. 3.2.3 BETSurfacearea In 1938 Stephen Brunauer, Paul Emmett, and Edward Teller developed the BET theory. The theory was based on adsorption, in which a known atom or molecule of specific gas adheres on the surface of the sample forming a layer. The theory was developed from Langmuir model (1916) which focuses on monolayer adsorption. In monolayer adsorption, when a thin layer of the gas (adsorbate) lies on the surface of the sample (adsorbent), equilibrium exists between adsorbed gaseous molecules and the free gaseous molecules. However, because this applies for monolayer, Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller extended Langmuir model isotherm model to cover multilayer adsorption. C is constant Usually argon and nitrogen are used in BET due to the stability of these gases [153]. Due to the nature of nitrogen and argon gases, the interaction between gas and solid is a weak interaction; therefore, the sample tube is immersed in liquid nitrogen, to cool the surface of the solid thus reasonable amount of gas is able to adhere on the surface of the solid. The run starts by creating a vacuum pressure in the system through a vacuum pump. A known amount of gas is injected as the low temperature solid surface until a thin layer of the gas is formed on the surface and no more adsorption is taking place.
