Method and characterisation 3.2.3.1 BET sample preparation method 0.5 g of mordenite was placed in oven at 90°C overnight. The weight of sample tube was recorded while is empty. Dried mordenite was placed in the sample tube and the weight was recorded. The sample tube was degassed in nitrogen at 150°C for 2 hours. The sample tube was placed in liquid nitrogen and sited in the BET chamber. 3.2.4 Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Since mordenite was silylated and sulfonated in this research, it is important to use FTIR to detect the groups attached on the mordenite surface. FTIR testing identifies chemical bond of organic and inorganic samples. In addition of identifying chemical species, it offers a quantitative analysis of chemical compounds. In general, absorption spectroscopy is the measurement of sample that absorbs light at each wavelength. In Fourier transform spectroscopy, the beam which is directed at the sample contains many frequencies of light. These frequencies are absorbed by the sample which corresponds to the frequencies due to the vibrations between the bonds of the atom. Finally Fourier transformation function converts the presented interfergrams into spectrum.
