Method and characterisation 3.4 Standard Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) The electrodes of the DMFC, anode and cathode, were prepared in the following sequence: for the anode side, Figure 3.18 Standard membrane electrode assembly layers used in as based line in DMFC The same sequences are followed for the cathode side in which anode and cathode were facing the Nafion 117 membrane. 3.4.1 Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) The Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) plays a major role in methanol diffusion and water management in DMFC. The GDL connects between the bipolar graphite plate and the electrode where reactant diffused from flow channels to the catalyst layer. It also provides a physical support for the catalyst layer. In order to prevent water clogging within the surface and the pores, the GDL usually is wet proof with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE 60 wt %). This way the methanol diffusion toward the catalyst layer will not be inhibited. The GDL consists of a microporous layer made of carbon on a sheet of carbon paper. In this work, the fabrication of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) starts from the preparation of carbon ink in iso-propanol (IPA) solvent which is discussed in detail in the next section. The following figure shows the arrangement of anode side of the Sirhan AL-Batty Page 95PDF Image | Membrane Electrode Assembly Modification by Zeolite and Graphene Oxide
