Method and characterisation The stainless steel plates were wrapped with an aluminum foil and placed in the thermal press. Two stages of hot press were preformed; the first stage was accomplished be thermal pressing the MEA at temperature and pressure of 135°C and 3 barg for 3 minutes. The second stage was made by turning the stainless steel plate and cooling down at a pressure of 3 barg for 30 minutes. After the hot press, the MEA was kept on the bench and cooled down naturally to room temperature. The MEA was placed in the fuel cell and kept under hydration, by circulating DI water for overnight. The following figure shows the anode placed on the stainless steel plate after spraying gas diffusion layer, catalyst layer and before hot press. Figure 3.24 Homemade anode electrode placed on stainless still plate before the hot press process 3.4.6.1 Scanning electron microscopy of carbon black The carbon black (support material) which has been used in the DMFC was imaged using SEM to show the microstructure of the particles. Carbon black is the first layer which acts as a gas diffusion layer in the MEA.
