Method and characterisation 3.5.7 Silylation of Mordenite Since mordenite is a hydrophilic (i.e.organophobic) material, it will weakly bind with Nafion framework (polymer matrix). To overcome this issue, silylation was carried out on the H-MOR. The grafting method was carried out by mixing 1 gram of H-MOR, with 1.0 ml of GMPTS or MPTS (silane agent) and 30 ml of dichloromethane as a solvent. Figure 3.32 shows the grafting method of H-MOR. Figure 3.32 Grafting Method of H-MOR The grafted mordenite was dried overnight in drying cabinet after the centrifuge process and kept ready to use in fabricating inorganic MEA and labelled as F-HMOR. It was suggested by Prapainainar et al [167] to use different silane coupling agent to achieve better adhesion properties between the inorganic/organic interfaces, therefore, mordenite was functionalized with two silanes agents and test in DMFC. To summarize the previous pre-treatments steps, mordenite was addressed using the following abbreviation. MOR: mordenite (commercial). HMOR: protonated mordenite via 1.0 M H2SO4. F-MOR: functionalized mordenite with GMPTS or MPTS. GMPTS: 3-glycidoxyproply-trimethoxysilane. MPTS: 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane. MPTS-HMOR: functionalized mordenite with MPTS.
