Method and characterisation The test was carried on by placing 0.5 grams of the SULFO in oven at 90°C overnight. The sample then was weighed and placed in the glass tube at 150°C, under nitrogen flow, for 2 hours. This was made to guarantee the removal of the moisture associated with the sample. Liquid nitrogen was used for cooling purposes. A protonated mordenite (H-MOR) sample was tested along with the sulfonated mordenite for comparison purpose. The following table shows the total surface areas mordenite samples. This indicates that a change in the surface area has been made to the sample, since both samples where tested at the same run. But still it is not qualitative technique where it can assure the presence of the sulfonic acid group on the surface of the mordenite. To overcome this issue, the sample was taken for FTIR test to detect the structure of organic/inorganic molecules structure. Due to the silylation of mordenite, FTIR can also identifying types of chemical bonds (functional groups). The samples were functionalized mordenite and SULFO-MOR (MPTS). All samples were grounded by mortar to fit into KBr plates. KBr plates were cleaned and used in this technique. Around 5 mg were placed in the KBr plate with few drops of mineral oil avoiding the formation of bubbles. The KBr plate was placed in the FTIR to obtainspectrum.
